Showing our thinking in different ways.

Problem solving - weight on PhotoPeach
Strong mathematicians show their thinking and understanding in different ways.  Look at how we solved this problem using numberlines, equations, data tables, words and pictures.  We even acted the problem out before we tried to solve it.  This helped us think more deeply about what the problem was asking us, and the maths and number we would be using.

Problem-

Toby is 3kgs heavier than Ben.
How heavy could they be?

Discovering the properties of clay

Discovering the properties of clay on PhotoPeach
We discovered that you could mould clay into different shapes.  We poked, prodded, cut, rolled squashed, flattened and shaped the clay.  It felt different when we added water to it.  Look at all of our amasing creations.

Colour mixing

We used eye droppers and dye to investigate colour.  We have been learning about the primary colours- red, yellow and blue.  When these colours are mixed we can make new colours.  Look at what we found out!

Learning about Capacity

Learning about capacity on PhotoPeach
Capacity is the amount of space inside an object that can be filled.  We measured and compared containers, milk bottles and lego buildings.  It was so much fun.  We worked as a team and helped each other with our learning.

Our inquiry by Allegra, Rowan, Mark, Alex and Hugo

Our inquiry by Allegra, Rowan, Mark, Alec and Hugo on PhotoPeach
Allegra wanted to know why trees changed colour in Autumn. Rowan found out why the Japanese flag is red and white.  Mark investigated why the moon was white.  Alec wanted to know why the sun is yellow and hugo found out what makes the colours of the rainbow!

Our inquiry by Jacob, Zion, Ben R, Grace and Amrit

Our inquiry by Jacob, Zion, Ben R, Grace and Amrit on PhotoPeach
Jacob found out why Leopards have spots.
Zion shared interesting facts about Cheetahs.
Ben investigated why snakes are brown...and then wanted to find out about the 5 most venemous snakes in Australia.
Graces inquiry delved into why tortoises are the colour they are and Amrit wanted to know why zebras are striped!

Showing our thinking in different ways

Problem Solving in Mathematics on PhotoPeach

Winter Collage Art on PhotoPeach
We loved making Winter Art Collages.  Can you see the different media we used to create the feeling of Winter.  First we blended cold colours from light to dark.  We used dye to make the background feel even more wintery.  The snowflakes were fun to make.  We had to fold white circles into quarters and cut out small shapes around the edge.  Be careful not to cut off all the fold!  When we opened the circle back out we had created beautiful snowflakes.  By ripping black paper we made the silhouette of a big old winter tree. The polystyrene pieces look like snow and of course the favourite part was adding glitter.
We hope you love our "Wintery Wonderland".  Aren't we clever artists!

The meaning of equals

In maths we are learning about the meaning of equals.  We think that we have created the longest equation ever.  Check out the blog to see if you agree.  We have been learning that equals is a bit like a balance and both sides of the balance must be the same.  We were then very clever and changed the equals sign to the addition sign.  See the video below.

Adding on groups of 10.

We changed the equals sign to the addition sign and counted on 34 groups of 10.  Do you know what the answer is?

Chameleon Calendar Art

Look at our stunning chameleon art.  We used colour and pattern to camouflage the chameleon. Clever aren't we.  These are going to be the designs used for calendar, card or diary art.  They make awesome gifts for Christmas  The order forms will be coming out soon.

Statistical investigations and what it means to be a "Data Detective".

We have been exploring number through statistical investigations.  Look at what we have been learning.  Look at our thinking in the slide show where we were learning to be "Data Detectives".
With a buddy we had to sort out the information and then display it.  Lots of groups sorted the information out in different ways.  We looked at and discussed the characteristics of a good graph.  We were able to made factual statements about what we found.  It is fun being "Data Detectives"!

Butterfly wings are symmetrical

Butterflies wings are symmetrical on PhotoPeach
We found out that butterfly wings are symmetrical.  That means that the pattern and the colour are the same on both wings.  We made some beautiful art works where we made the butterfly wings symmetrical.  We drew a simple pattern with black crayon on one wing then we folded our paper in half and Mrs Jarvis ironed over the paper.  The heat from the iron melted the back crayoned pattern onto the other side of the paper.  We carefully coloured over the black outline.  Notice how we carefully coloured each wing so that they were the same on each side.  This makes the wings symmetrical!

We are learning about Place Value

We have been learning that numbers have a place and a value.  Groupings of 10 are very important.  Skip counting in 10's will help find the value of a number.  Look at our learning. Place Value on PhotoPeach

Constable Chris and the Police Car on PhotoPeach
We had a lot of fun in Constable Chris's Police Car.  I think there maybe some budding Police Constables in Room 8.  Wow, the siren is REALLY LOUD!!  If you are in your car and hear the siren going you need to move out of the way and make a clear path for the police car to go through.

Number through Algebra

Srong mathematicians find patterns in numbers.
Strong mathematicians make connections from what they know to new learning situations.

Look at our choral count.  We counted back in 1's..
We noticed-

It was like backwards counting.
Our number got less/smaller by 1 count each time.
It is like taking away 1.
When we looked down the columns we noticed more patterns in numbers.
Looking across the rows there were even more patterns!

Our choral count started at 2 and added 2 each time.
Our number got great/bigger by 2.
We noticed a lot of patterns in the numbers.
Look across the row...the number always ends in 2,4,6,8,0
The next row are all teen numbers.
The following row are numbers in the twenties and the next row are numbers in the thirties?
What do you notice when you look down the columns?
2,12,22,32....what number will be next in the pattern?

What do you think we choral counted in?
What patterns can you see?

How many ways can you make 10?

Look at the patterns we found in numbers when we subtracted/took away to make 10.

What number patterns do you see?
