Environmental Oral Presentations

Environmental Oral Presentations on PhotoPeach

Oral Language- I am learning to present a report from the newspaper, internet, website or a book about an event that is happening or has happened, in my environment.
The environment can be local, (Havelock North, Hawkes Bay), national (New Zealand) or international (World).
An example of suitable happenings the children may like to talk about may be – effects of the weather, conservation projects, autumn photos, earthquake developments, Anzac Day, endangered species.  (The websites listed on the Blog may help.  Keep it simple.)
I am learning to speak clearly and confidently in front of an audience.
I can do this if I-
  • Speak slowly and clearly.
  • Use a loud voice others can hear.
  • Look at my audience when I am speaking

I am learning to tell my audience about a happening in my environment..
I can do this if I-
  • Introduce the report by reading the heading.
  • Tell my audience
ü  Who or what the report is about.
ü  Where the report is taking place.
ü  When it took place.
ü  What I have learnt after reading the report.

  • Use language related to the article.
  • Talk about what is happening in the photo.
  • Give appropriate answers to questions about the report.

Hector's Dolphin: meet the locals

The Yellow-Eyed Penguin or Hoiho

Pania of the Reef

We have been reading the Maori Legend - Pania of the Reef.  Here is the song about her.  Have you seen the statue on the Marine Parade in Napier?

New Zealand Hector Dolphin

This is our New Zealand Hector's Dolphin.
They are ONLY found in New Zealand and so they are very special.
Too many Hector's Dolphins are dying because they are being caught in fishing nets.  So we need to find a way to protect them.
In this newspaper I found a story about how the Department of Conservation are using special  equipment like camera's and sensors to find out how many dolphins are being caught in nets.
Maybe they will stop fishermen using some nets in some places around New Zealand to help save this special      animal from extinction.

Doubling and halving

Halving and doubling on PhotoPeach

We are learning to use what we know about doubling and halving to solve problems.  We are also using our knowledge of adding, subtracting and groupings (multiplication) to help us.  I wonder if we could use division.  When we divide we share...hmmm.  I wonder... 22 shared between 2 people...

The Aquarium

The Aquarium on PhotoPeach
At the Aquarium we had such fun and learnt a lot about the marine creatures that live in and around our waters.  Playing the penguin game made us think carefully about the environment the penguins live in and the dangers they can face. We also learnt about different marine life, food webs and how different creatures become endangered, threatened and extinct.  It is up to us to help make a difference and to keep our marine environment clean, healthy and safe.  What are some of the things that you can do to make a difference?

Room 8's Bucket Band

We made a bucket band.  We learnt to keep a beat.  We read and played different rhythms.  It was fun!
The tricky part was starting and finishing together.

So what does skip counting, repeated addition, groups of and multiplication all have in common?
