Number through Algebra

Srong mathematicians find patterns in numbers.
Strong mathematicians make connections from what they know to new learning situations.

Look at our choral count.  We counted back in 1's..
We noticed-

It was like backwards counting.
Our number got less/smaller by 1 count each time.
It is like taking away 1.
When we looked down the columns we noticed more patterns in numbers.
Looking across the rows there were even more patterns!

Our choral count started at 2 and added 2 each time.
Our number got great/bigger by 2.
We noticed a lot of patterns in the numbers.
Look across the row...the number always ends in 2,4,6,8,0
The next row are all teen numbers.
The following row are numbers in the twenties and the next row are numbers in the thirties?
What do you notice when you look down the columns?
2,12,22,32....what number will be next in the pattern?

What do you think we choral counted in?
What patterns can you see?

How many ways can you make 10?

Look at the patterns we found in numbers when we subtracted/took away to make 10.

What number patterns do you see?

Discovery- making balloon rockets

Discovery is a time for making, creating, problem solving, perservering and working together.  Wow, Hugo and Jacob did all of these things!

Bee Bots

We programme the Bee Bots to move in different directions using forward, backward, left, right, 1/2 and 1/4 turns. They are a lot of fun!

The Ambulance

We had a visit from Amanda and the ambulance.  We learnt what is inside the ambulance, why we have them, how to call one and the importance of knowing home address so we can direct the ambulance to our homes if needed.  We are all learning our full name, address and telephone number to help keep ourselves and others safe.

Rockets

Making Rockets with Balloons on PhotoPeach
One of the activies at Dicovery was to make a rocket.  For this activiy we had to find a buddy to work with.  Can you see how we needed to read the instructions, comprehend (think about what we were being asked to do), work together, solve problems (reason) and persevere to make our balloon rocket work?

Discovery Learning

Discovery Learning on PhotoPeach
Look at all the activities we are able to take part in at Discovery.  Learning to work with each other, take turns, solve problems and practise skills is what it is all about!!  Learning is so much fun!

Sam has his hair shaved for Child Cancer

Sam is having his hair shaven to raise funds and an awareness for child cancer.

Mrs Abrahamson's nephew is a survivor of cancer and he shaved Sam's head.  He goes to Hastings Boys' High School.

Millie received the Principal's Award and was able to shake Sam's hand.

We are all very proud of you Sam.  You are living our school values of Aroha, respect, resilience and excellence.  Sam raised over $1000 for child cancer.  Thank you so much for your support.

Face Sculptures

Our Face Sculptures on PhotoPeach
Look at the wonderful face sculptures we made using junk and collage material.  We tried to find objects that had a similar shape to the features on our faces.  At times it was quite difficult gluing on the smaller bits and pieces but we persevered and didn't give up.  We think Picasso would be impressed with our works of art.

Abstract Faces

Abstract Faces on PhotoPeach
We have been learning about different styles of art through the artist Picasso.  These pieces of work are based on our faces but they look quite different to our self portraits.  We had to be very brave and not take our pencil off the page when we were drawing.  The important thing was to still think about all the features on our face, so when you look at our work you will see eyes, noses, mouths, eyebrows, cheeks, ears and hair.  The faces don't look real but they do look like faces. We used different colours to shade in each shape.  These are abstract pictures of our faces.

We dressed up for Art Deco.  Wow we looked smart!
We were able to look at this olden day car.

The steering wheel was very big.

There is lots of space in the back seat.

Wonderful dress ups!
